Cerebral ischemia causes changes in energy metabolism and glucose utilization. Overexpression of glucose transporters (GLUT-1 and GLUT-3) is a mechanism of defense in cerebral ischemia. HIF-1 regulation of these transporters depends on the cellular redox state. The use of compounds with antioxidant properties such as aged garlic extract (EAE) and S-alilcisteína (SAC) also could regulate the expression of genes that codifies for proteins with antioxidant activity as the glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC). This enzyme is responsible for the synthesis of glutathione (GSH), and the primary reducing agent in the cell.
